Climate Change Expert to Speak at Branford Land Trust Annual Meeting
Branford CT: "A pervasive sense up to now has been that climate change is distant — distant in time, and distant in space...and what we're now beginning to see is that it's not so distant. It's not just future generations. It's us and it's our own children." — Anthony Leiserowitz
As a kick-off for its 50th Anniversary Celebration, the Branford Land Trust's (BLT) Annual Meeting will feature guest speaker Anthony Leiserowitz, Ph.D., Senior Research Scientist at the Yale University School of Forestry & Environmental Studies and Director of the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 24 at the Blackstone Memorial Library in Branford. The evening is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
The Annual Meeting will include a brief presentation by BLT President Peter Raymond followed by "Climate Change in the American Mind," a presentation by Leiserowitz. Leiserowitz is expert on American and international public opinion on global warming, including public perception of climate change risks, support and opposition for climate policies, and willingness to make individual behavioral change. His research investigates the psychological, cultural, political, and geographic factors that drive public environmental perception and behavior.
He has conducted survey, experimental, and field research at scales ranging from the global to the local, including international studies, the United States, individual states (Alaska and Florida), municipalities (New York City), and with the Inupiaq Eskimo of Northwest Alaska. He also conducted the first empirical assessment of worldwide public values, attitudes, and behaviors regarding global sustainability, including environmental protection, economic growth, and human development.
