Time to Make the Bagels
Who makes the best bagels? You do, with a little lesson at Congregation Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek (CBSRZ).
Bagels are notoriously hard to make. It’s even harder to agree upon who makes the best ones. Now, thanks to CBSRZ and WTNH’s meteorologist Sam Kantrow, you can learn how to make your own, with a demonstration of the tricky double process.
According to Congregation President Maxine Klein, the idea for the program came from congregation member Jody Dole. Dole knew Kantrow, and especially knew of Kantrow’s talent for baked goods. Dole thought that the event could be something fun and different.
While Kantrow might be better known as a member of Storm Team 8, he also has a knack for baking—including challah and bagels (neither of which, as any foodie or amateur baker will point out, is easy to master). Bagels are first boiled, then baked. Kantrow will bring the dough already-made to CBSRZ, and all attendees will have the chance to roll some bagels and watch the first process: the boiling.
Due to limited space, only 18 people will be able to participate in the second process, in which the bagels are finished, seasoned, and baked. Those 18 will be chosen first-come, first-served through the website registration process, where potential attendees can choose what they want to register for. Lox, coffee, and of course, bagels, will be served as well.
“We love to bring the community into our space, and we thought that having someone sort of locally famous would bring more people in,” said Klein. “We are the only Jewish congregation in the larger Chester area—the next closest is Temple Beth Tikvah in Madison—and we have lots of things that are open to the wider community, from musical performances to author readings, and a standing art gallery.”
The demonstration will take place on Sunday, May 7 at 11:30 a.m. at CBSRZ (55 East Kings Highway). The cost of the program is $18 for congregation members, $20 for non-members, and, while space lasts, $36 to participate in the second part of the bagel-making process.
