Saybrook Budget Vote Set, Paint Project Approved
The Annual Budget Meeting will be held on Monday, May 1, at 7 p.m. at the Old Saybrook Middle School Auditorium. Consistent with the Town Charter, the annual budget meeting will be adjourned to a referendum to be held on Tuesday, May 9, at the Old Saybrook High School Gymnasium from noon to 8 p.m.
Two budget questions will be on the ballot at referendum. The first is whether or not to adopt the general government budget of $19,609,661, an increase of $498,614 or 2.6 percent over current spending. The second is whether or not to adopt the Board of Education budget of $25,767,661, an increase of $329,831 or 1.3 percent over current spending. The combined budgets, at $45,377,322, represent an overall 1.9 percent increase in spending.
At the April 11 Board of Selectmen at which the Call of the Annual Town Budget Meeting and Referendum was set, the selectmen also approved up to $40,000 to repaint the Youth & Family Services Agency Building’s exterior before summer.
The funding request then moved to the Board of Finance on April 25 (after press time) for action; if approved as expected, an appropriation request will go to Town Meeting. Funds would be drawn from the town’s Capital and Non-Recurring fund, a savings account used to pay for municipal facilities capital maintenance projects.
The date of the Town Meeting to act on approval of the painting project appropriation was not yet set at press time.
