03/21/2017 03:45 PMFaced with 2015-’16 Board of Education spending that was $918,000 over budget, the Town of East Haven has hired an independent auditor to review the Board of Education budgets for both the current fiscal year (2016-’17) and 2015-’16. The auditor is from PKF O’Connor Davies in Wethersfield.
According to East Haven Finance Director Paul Rizza, the auditor’s two main objectives are to verify that the Board of Education was over budget by $918,000 for 2015-’16 and review how that happened, and to look at this fiscal year’s budget to make sure there will be no reoccurrence.
The Board of Education has been in a budget freeze since Oct. 1. Rizza said it is important for the town to take corrective action immediately if the auditor projects an overage for this fiscal year. Rizza said he is hopeful for a final report from the auditor by the end of this month. The current fiscal year ends June 30.
