Guilford Fall Festival Returns Oct. 8
With summer now officially over, it is time for the annual Guilford Fall Festival. Now in its fifth year, the festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 8 at Jacobs Beach and promises food and activities for the whole family.
Put on by the Guilford Parks & Recreation Department, the event will include inflatables, face painters, live music provided by The Sharades, crafts, snacks, and more. Additionally, the MILLA Project, a non-profit group dedicated the promotion of minority groups and gender equality, will assist with decorating pumpkins and gourds. Waves of Freedom, a non-profit group dedicated to beach cleanup and wildlife protection, will also volunteer at the event.
Program Coordinator Shawn Keogh said both groups will be an asset to the event.
“The MILLA Project is a group that is currently running cooking programs through our department,” he said. “They have been active in trying to promote their programs and offer new ideas in our winter session. They came to us with an idea to design and decorate pumpkins and we asked if they would do it at the Fall Festival to promote their group.”
Keogh said Waves of Freedom will also make sure the beach is clean after the event.
“Waves of Freedom has done two previous beach cleanups of Jacobs Beach and they came to us with the idea of doing it again,” he said. “They offered to come to the event with a booth selling baked goods as a fundraiser and their group will clean up the beach after the event.”
The event will also include some unique activities, like disc golf.
“Disc golf is a hybrid of Frisbee and golf,” said Keogh. “There are both 9 hole and 18 hole courses. A golfer has a certain number of throws with a disc to reach the ‘hole,’ which is a stand that has a chain basket standing on top. The disc will go through the chain to finish the hole.”
The department is also working to get local businesses, such as Bishop’s Orchards, to provide food for the event. The food truck Taqueria Cinco is scheduled to be at the event and cotton candy and popcorn will be provided as well.
The Guilford Fall Festival will be held Saturday, Oct. 8 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at Jacob’s Beach on Seaside Avenue.
