Guilford Wraps Up Road Work
With summer now at an end, the Town of Guilford is finishing up a season of heavy roadwork with only a few big projects left to complete.
The Public Works Department began its chip sealing program, a process in which a protective coating is applied to existing pavement, in early August. Roads that were chip sealed included Great Hill Road, Cooks Lane, Long Hill Road, Ledge Hill Road, Whispering Woods, Firetower Road, Moose Hill Road, Granite Road, and Clear Lake Manor.
First Selectman Joe Mazza said the town was pleased to be able to get to so many roads this year despite the difficult budget season.
“We pretty much have done everything, mostly in the North Guilford area,” he said. “We did a lot of chip sealing there and paid a lot of attention to the Northwood area, too.”
Town Engineer Jim Portley said the town also reconstructed River Street and re-laid Broad Street this year in addition to the other chip sealing projects. He said the town just has a few more things to finish up on Great Hill Road.
“The last section of Great Hill we have left until we install a box culvert probably in the later part of October because there was a delay in the manufacturing of the culvert,” he said. “That will complete Great Hill.”
With all other roads completed, the next big project on the horizon focuses on Tuttles Point Road, according to Mazza.
“We are going to start next month on the major project, which is the road elevation of Tuttles Point,” he said. “That is one of the three major shoreline roads that we had designated a couple of years ago that needed to be raised. We started with Old Quarry Road and then we did Chaffinch Island Road last year and now we are doing Tuttles Point.”
Portley said construction on Tuttles Point Road is getting underway soon.
“Our permit starts Oct. 1, so work will begin and then we have to have that completed by the beginning of November,” he said.
