Citizen Science Day is Saturday, Aug. 6 on Outer Island in Stony Creek, Branford, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Registration is free; however space is limited and online reservations are required.

Citizen Science Day will explain the current research on 21st-century sea level rise and the environmental trends recorded in marsh sediments along the coast. Throughout the day, visitors will do hands-on activities to get a sense of how environmental data is collected, with activities such as counting invasive shore crab populations and assessing water quality. Physical and ecological changes affecting Long Island Sound’s coastal ecosystems will be discussed by Dr. Troy Hill, a biologist at the Environmental Protection Agency’s Atlantic Ecology Division.

Visitors will also see how the refuge serves as a research station in partnership with the CT State University. Hollie Brandstatter of Southern Connecticut State University will explain the projects conducted on the island. Participants will also learn how to get involved with Outer Island projects.

Participants will meet at the Stony Creek town ferry dock at 9:30 a.m. for ferry transport to Outer Island. Participants should bring a picnic lunch and wear sturdy shoes for safe footing on slippery rocks.

There is no cost to attend, but registration on Eventbrite is required—search “Outer island" here to register. Registration is limited to 25 teen and adult participants.
