06/07/2016 04:00 PMWith the arrival of warm weather, the Town of Madison kicked off its annual road-paving program this week on June 6, starting with the completion of Green Hill Road. The town reclaimed the first section of Green Hill Road from Nortontown Road to Durham Road in summer 2015.
First Selectman Tom Banisch said they will now pave the last part of Green Hill.
“This is the completion of Green Hill Road from Route 79 out to the Killingworth town line,” he said.
The project is expected to take four to six weeks and will be completed by Tilcon, the paving contractor hired by the town. Banisch said he expects this section will be less expensive than the first section of Green Hill Road.
“The part from 79 out that they did last year was about $2 million, but I don’t think this is more than $1 million,” he said.
Assistant Director of Public Works John Iennaco said in a release that the town had initially hoped to start construction after school let out for the summer, but scheduling was an issue.
“This would have resulted in the contractor not being able to begin until mid-July and pushed the schedule up against the school opening day in the fall,” he said.
Construction of Green Hill Road, particularly near the intersection of Copse Road, caused some issues last summer. Sections of the road had to be re-graded to improve sight lines, but the shift in elevation affected several residents’ driveways. Banisch said the town will try to avoid any similar problems this year.
“I haven’t heard of anything, but I would say probably not because I think they probably learned from last year that it didn’t go over well,” he said.
A list of additional roads to be paved and the paving schedule will be made available once it has been finalized. Banisch said Public Works is going to be more aggressive with paving this season.
“We are going to see an up-tick in the amount of work that gets done,” he said.
