QU 'Big Event' Bobcats Assist Branford Garden Club
On April 9, some hearty Bobcats came to town to assist Branford Garden Club spruce up Rosenthal Gardens. The youthful volunteer crew from Quinnipaic University (QU) where counted among 1800 QU students fanning out assist at more than 100 community sites on April 9 during the school's annual community service effort, "The Big Event."
Located on Kirkham Street, the senior housing complex includes about one acre of gardens maintained by the Branford Garden Club (BGC). On April 9, BGC's Eunice Lasala led a crew of 18 QU students who volunteered their time to help spruce up the garden for spring.
"The Big Event" is QU's largest, single-day community service effort encouraging involvement and action from its student population. The university reaches out to local civic organization to organize student assistance for the day.
As noted at its website, Branford Garden Club's mission is to "...stimulate a knowledge and love of gardening, horticulture and floral design; to encourage and support civic development and to promote conservation efforts." The Rosenthal Gardens public garden space, known as "Twin Pools," incorporates a small walkway through the garden, which includes native trees and shrubs.
