This morning, Branford Republican Committee chairman Ray Ingraham shared a brief statement confirming the passing of a Branford icon, Daniel P. Cosgrove. His grandson, James B. Cosgrove is currently serving his second term as Branford's First Selectman.

Born in October 1917, Cosgrove was 98 years old.

"Sad news today, we regret to report the passing of Dan Cosgrove, grandfather of First Selectman Jamie Cosgrove," said Ingraham. "Dan was a man that loved Branford with every ounce of his soul. His guidance will be greatly missed. Branford Republicans pass on condolences to the Cosgrove family and all the people Dan touched."

A self-made business owner who established Cosgrove Construction Co. of Branford as well as other businesses here, Cosgrove was an instrumental, and sometimes controversial, influence in the political and developmental landscape of Branford for more than 50 years. He was one of the town's largest property owners and brought in development in the 1970's including much in the east end of town, such as the new truck stop on East Industrial Road (now TA Travel Center).

A Todd's Hill resident, Cosgrove's years in Branford business included his base out of his company's North Main Street garage. An animal lover, he generally traveled and even went to work with canine companions and was the motivating factor and supporter when it came to establishing the present-day Branford-North Branford Daniel P. Cosgrove Animal Shelter.

A former Democrat who once headed up the 12th District Democratic State Central Committee, he was influential with Branford's Democratic government in the 1960's and 1970's. Always considered a maverick, he formed his own party in 1989, the Taxpayer's Party, and went on to be elected as Branford's Third Selectman. Cosgrove retired from his involvement in local politics in 1995.

In 2012, his daughter, Susan Barnes, helped to arrange a 95th birthday celebration for Cosgrove which brought out many in town to help Cosgrove celebrate.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 14, 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. at W.S. Clancy Memorial Funeral Home, 244 North Main St. Branford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, April 15 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Church in Branford. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to CT Hospice, 100 Double Beach Rd. Branford, CT 06405.
