First JHS Wellness Fair an Interactive Success
Press Release Jan. 29, 2016: Jerome Harrison Elementary School (JHS) in North Branford hosted their first ever Wellness Fair on Thurs. Jan. 28 in the school gym featuring student and guest presenters, a variety of activities, and over 300 participants throughout the day.
Students in kindergarten, first grade, and second grade all participated by leading class presentations or interactive exhibits about aspects of health and wellness. Topics presented by the students included healthy foods, the benefits of water, hand-washing, germs, sleep, mindful breathing, yoga, karate, physical activity, food groups, the dangers of sugar, and many more.
Students and classes were presented and taught throughout the day to visiting parents, community members, teachers and students and the North Branford Community was impressed with how knowledgeable and articulate JHS students were about their topics.
Each student also left the event with their own bag, including items and information about wellness, thanks to the support of the school's Parent Teacher Organization (PTO). The event was also supported by the JHS "Dream Team," which is a committed group of North Branford High School students that serve as mentors to JHS K-2 students.
Additionally, the Quinnipiac University's Women's Track and Field Team participated in the event and educated students on the benefits of physical activity through an interactive activity.
By the end of the day, over 300 visitors came to the event to celebrate wellness and learn from our students. The event was organized by JHS first grade teacher Katie Ayotte and the school wellness committee.
JHS Principal Carter Welch, Ed.D, said the event is another way that the school continues to showcase student learning and invite the community to partner with education. Welch added that health and Wellness is certainly alive on North Branford and at Jerome Harrison Elementary School.
