01/21/2016 06:16 AMBranford waters were calm off Linden Avenue this morning as the sun began to rise; but residents are following news of approaching Winter Storm Jonas – and wondering just how bad it will be in these parts.
In Branford, the worries may not be so much the snow, but the wind and potential coastal flooding that arrives on Saturday with this classic nor'easter.
According to www.weatherchannel.com, the storm kicks off in the mid-Atlantic states today initially as snow and ice, turning into a "major" snowstorm Friday as it reaches further up the East Coast.
By late Saturday morning, it's expected to be edging into New York City, with heavy snow of 3" to 5" and strong, possibly damaging winds up to 34 miles per hour and coastal flooding.
As of 7 a.m. today, the weather website calls for a mostly sunny day in Branford Thursday, as well as on Friday; with a snowless start to Saturday, which will have a 10:30 a.m. high tide. However, the weather experts have tagged Saturday with a 50 percent chance of afternoon precipitation into the evening that could include "snow showers" with expected accumulation of one inch; while winds are expected to reach gusts of 25 to 32 miles per hour. Saturday's winds could include occassional gusts of over 50 miles per hour in the afternoon and will continue to push in gusts of over 40 miles per hour into the night.
Sunday's potential lingering snow showers should clear as the morning continues; but the early part of the day will still have some strong, gusty winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour.
