01/10/2016 12:57 PMFor the 31st year, Branford will be home to the shoreline’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr., breakfast celebration, set for Monday, Jan. 18 at 8:30 a.m. at St. Therese Catholic Church, 105 Leetes Island Road.
Organized by a coalition of local faith organizations, the breakfast, which recognizes the birthday of the leader of the modern American Civil Rights movement, was born at Branford’s Zion Church in 1985. Through the years, it’s grown exponentially, drawing folks from across the shoreline and always pulling in a packed house. Seating at the St. Therese church hall is limited to 200.
The Jan. 18 morning event includes a full breakfast, live performances of inspirational songs, a responsive litany using Dr. King’s speeches and beliefs, and an engaging keynote speaker.
This year’s speaker is New Haven Mayor Toni Harp. Known as “the conscience of the State Senate” during her 20 years of elected service (District 10) at the Capitol, Harp is described in her official City of New Haven biography as being steered in her public service work by “an abiding commitment to social justice.”
Members of Branford High School Music Makers, directed by Cathyann Roding, will provide the breakfast’s live inspirational music. The meal will be cooked and served by members of the all-volunteer Martin Luther King. Jr.. Breakfast Committee. The menu includes scrambled eggs, pancakes, bacon, sausage, orange juice. and coffee.
Tickets, $10 each, are available by calling Betty Ann Trapasso at 203-488-2845 or Marion Lovig at 203-481-5321. Event proceeds benefit local social service programs.
