12/16/2015 09:00 AMYou may be among those drivers eying the newly paved parking lot at the Old Saybrook Train Station and wondering, when will it open?
No more finding parking on the grassy strips on either side of North Main Street? Real paved parking? Oh yeah!
Though the construction fencing surrounding the parking lot construction site bars vehicle entry to the new paved parking lot, the 199-space lot appears to be finished. The parking lot is fully paved, the curbing installed, the light posts are in, and the parking lots spaces and lines are striped with paint.
So what’s holding up the opening?
Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) spokesman Kevin Nursick said, “The lot is essentially complete. All that remains is to complete the handicapped ramps. The pre-cast slabs that comprise the ramps will be delivered on site by Dec. 15. Then the foundations for the ramps need to be poured and a railings added.”
Amtrak officials are involved in the review of the ramps’ foundation work.
Nursick said that DOT has not yet a firm date for the train station parking lot to open.
