12/02/2015 09:00 AMFilling the Stone House in Deep River with the fragrance of the holiday season, 17 different Christmas trees decorated by a variety of different town civic organizations will vie for your vote in the 2015 Festival of Trees.
“This is a way for our civic organizations to showcase their mission statement in a creative and festive way and for the townspeople to come out and support these organizations,” said Rhonda Forristall, curator of the Deep River Historical Society.
The organizations include the Deep River/Chester Lions Club, Deep River Ambulance, Deep River Fire Department, Girl Scouts, Deep River Congregational Church Green Team, CDE Nursery School, American Legion and Auxiliary, Deep River Library, Deep River Merchant Association, Winthrop Baptist Church, Winthrop Cemetery Association, Deep River Junior Ancients Fife and Drum Corps, Deep River Housing Authority, Pay 4ward, the Deep River Garden Club, and Club 60.
Visitors get to vote on their favorite tree. Awards will be presented in three categories: Best Representation of Theme, Most Creative Use of Materials, and, new this year, all participants will be eligible for the Celebrity’s Choice Award. Each category will have a junior and adult award.
Forristall explained that voting takes place on Friday, Dec. 4, from 5 to 8 p.m.
“In addition this year we are looking at traditions. Frank Santoro, a trustee of the society, has set up his Lionel trains for display and there will be a recurring train theme throughout the house. Trees will be located in every room of the house, including the bathroom and spilling over into the Carriage House,” said Forristall.
Another special addition to this year’s Festival of Trees is the sale of the Deep River Garden Club’s unique ornament.
“Last year there were so many requests for the ornaments that they decided to make their ornaments available for sale this year,” said Forristall. “Dec. 4 and 5 is a very busy weekend in Deep River with so many events going on and families do have to choose what suits them. The Festival of Trees, Trains, and Traditions is a fun way to get into the spirit of the holidays and support our civic organizations that support us all year long, so come out and vote for your favorite tree.”
