JHS Kids Honor Veterans
Jerome Harrison Elementary School (JHS) welcomed students, families, and veterans to school today with a sea of red, white and blue. All students were wearing these colors and carrying small flags to wave at the veterans as a show of love and support. Additionally, the walls of the school were decorated with patriotic artwork from all Jerome Harrison students under the direction of art teacher Diane Remetta.
Students and staff spent their Veteran's Day morning recognizing and honoring local veterans during a formal assembly. The day began with a full breakfast in the JHS cafeteria served by Michael Augur and the North Branford Food Service Staff.
Over 50 local veterans were in attendance and enjoyed their breakfast and time to meet and reminisce with each other. After breakfast, our veterans were honored by a ceremony that included patriotic music sung by staff and students at JHS as well as Landcraft Fife and Drum Corps (songs included "The Star Spangled Banner," "You're a Grand Old Flag" and "God Bless America"). Local Cub Scouts led the Pledge of Allegiance to start the ceremony.
Veterans were honored during the ceremony by student essays on "What it Means to Be a Hero" read to them during the event. Students concluded the ceremony by singing the song "Hero" as a tribute to the veterans, who were given cards from students thanking them for their service and dedication. During the event students also learned about the branches of the United States Military.
Veterans Day at JHS was a wonderful success and was attended by State Senator Ted Kennedy, State Representative Vincent Candelora, and Superintendent of Schools Scott Schoonmaker.
The annual event at JHS is planned by teachers Miki DeCaprio, Linda Humphrey, and Patti Carlo and continues to grow as a great way to honor veterans and educate students about the importance of Veteran's Day.
