Local Businesses Make Tree Lighting Bright
When Santa flips the switch on Nov. 28, Branford's Christmas Tree on the town green will shine more brightly than ever this year, thanks to new lights and donations -- both new and evergreen -- from two local businesses.
Parks and Recreation Director Alex Palluzzi said the tree has been strung with 1,000 new LED lights and thanks John Witkowsky & Sons Tree Removal of North Branford for donating their time, labor and equipment to rig the lights this year. In a hometown connection, Palluzzi pointed out, "John Witkowsky is a former star quarterback for the Branford High School Football Team."
Palluzzi also noted that Branford's living Christmas Tree, a 35-foot Blue Spruce, was donated to the town 25 years ago by Branford resident Bill Van Wilgen, proprietor of Van Wilgen's Garden Center in North Branford. As the tree takes center stage at holiday time each year, Van Wilgen's donation remains an evergreen contribution to the town.
Branford's classic Holiday Parade & Tree Lighting takes place on Sat. Nov. 28, stepping off from BHS at 6 p.m. to march up Main Street and on to the Christmas Tree lighting on the green. Santa is expected to light the tree at approximately 6:45 p.m. whether the night is clear or in "...rain, shine or even snow!" said Palluzzi.
