10/14/2015 12:00 AMIn advance of the Guilford Commons opening, Michaels will be holding its grand opening on Sunday, Oct. 25. Michaels, an arts and crafts specialty retailer, is one of the main retailers at the new Guilford Commons Shopping center.
For the grand opening, a ribbon cutting will be help at 9:45 a.m. and doors will open at 10 a.m. The store will give away gift cards and prizes throughout the day totaling nearly $1,500 according to a press release.
Michaels bills itself as the largest specialty retailer of arts and crafts in America. This new store will include sections for home décor and floral design, a scrapbooking and paper crafts department, a jewelry department, a kids and ’tweens section, art supplies, and custom framing, and will offer a variety of classes.
Michaels District Manager Tony Conte said the company is excited to open the store.
“Michaels is constantly evaluating growth opportunities, and with this area’s continued growth along with this beautiful new shopping center, we realized our Guilford store would be a welcome and highly anticipated addition to the local community,” he said.
The new store will also bring 60 new jobs to the area, many of them filled by local residents.
“The majority of our more than 60 employees are from Guilford and its surrounding communities, including East Haven, Branford, Old Saybrook, and a few others,” he said. “We are still hiring for several positions, all of which can be found on Michaels.com.”
The Guilford Commons Shopping Center is expected to hold its grand opening in early November.
