09/29/2015 03:45 PMThe Guilford Lions Club is celebrating 65 years of service to the community this year. The Guilford branch is one of the oldest branches in the surrounding area and has been honored by the town.
First Selectman Joseph Mazza presented a proclamation to club President Edward Montague on Sept. 25 to honor 65 years since the club received its charter.
“I am very proud to present this proclamation to the Lions Club for their 65 years of service to our town and for all of the good work you have done,” he said. “You have done so much for Guilford and all of the various organizations you reach through your fundraising.”
The Lions Club has branches all over the world and will be celebrating 100 years of service in 2017. The club’s goals are to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, encourage peace, and promote understanding according to its website, www.lionsclubs.org.
Mazza said the club has been a great influence for the community.
“We are very happy you are here and we hope that you will continue for another 65 years,” he said.
Guilford Lions Club President Edward Montague said he was very honored to receive the award and is looking forward to what the club would do next.
“We thank you and we thank you for all of your support,” he said. “We are always looking for more members and we are very happy that we have had more women join us. We keep moving forward.”
The Guilford Lions Club’s next event will be Liberty Day on March 16th, dedicated to celebrating James Madison’s birthday and to educate people about the Declaration of Independence and the U.S Constitution.
