Branford students of all ages went back to school today, the first day of the 2015-16 school year for Branford Public Schools.

At the town's three elementary schools this morning, sidewalks were crowded with parents who'd put their kids on the bus, then drove to school to greet them – and grab a photo or video – as they disembarked.

Zip06 caught the action at Tisko Elementary School, where Principal Jim O'Connor took the opportunity to greet as many students as possible with the message, "Happy First Day of School!"

O'Connor brought in some reinforcements in the form of several large character balloon figures roaming the sidewalk, including Buzz Lightyear, Sponge Bob Square Pants, Thomas the Tank Engine and a Minion.

"I like to have some familiar movie characters out here for them; last year it was Mickey and Minnie Mouse. It's just another way to enhance the environment so everybody's less stressed," O'Connor told Zip06.

Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez sent a welcome out to all students and parents today, saying, on behalf of the school district and faculty, "I wish everyone a wonderful school year. We look forward to an exciting year full of learning experiences and opportunities to ensure that each child is supported in their education."
