Munro Named NB's New Rec Director
The Town Council unanimously approved Lauren Munro as the new Director of Recreation, replacing former Director Pam Gery.
When Gery left the spot in June for her new role with Darien Parks and Recreation, she recommended Munro as Interim Director. Munro took over as interim from June 5 until Aug. 21. Following approval by the Town Council on Aug. 11, Munro was named
North Branford's new Director of Recreation will begin Monday, Aug. 24, 2015.
A North Branford native, Munro was hired by the Parks and Recreation Department 18 years ago to assist with Senior Programming. When Gery took over leadership of the department 15 years ago, she created the role of Recreation Program Supervisor and Munro was promoted to fill the position. As a result of Munro's latest promotion, the department is currently seeking a new Program Supervisor.
Munro said she's excited to lead the next phase of growth for the town's recreation programming and facilities. The Recreation Department is based at the Stanley T. Williams Community Center in Northford and offers programs, trips and events for residents of all ages.
"Just like Pam had visions, I have some visions I'd like to see," said Munro, naming some of the first things she wants to address. "I'd like to see the inside of our community center become more welcoming; I'd like see more walking trails and upgrades to equipment."
She's very interested in taking on project and event planning and already has something new in mind.
"I'd like to start small, with a Winter Festival," said Munro.
Munro said she's looking forward to continuing to work with the department staff and the town, and feels her intrinsic understanding of what it's like to live and play in North Branford is going to assist her in her work.
"I grew up in town, so I know the community and the people in town," said Munro. "People are responding to a lot of the programs and events and trips we have to offer; and we are going to continue to offer those types of things and more."
