08/16/2015 08:23 AMAt one of Branford's best-known small businesses, owner Carol Cornachini has quietly been making a difference in the lives of women supported by BHcare.
Just as she has in years past, once again, Cornachini recently welcomed a group of BHcare "customers" through the doors of Shoetique; so that she and her staff could spend some quality time measuring, fitting and finding all 16 guests their ideal summer shoes – in fact, two pairs for each. The shoe store's guests were attended to during two visits.
"Each client worked with one of Carol's staff and was professionally fitted for new sandals, and they each received two new pairs of shoes with an average retail value of $150 per pair," said Emily Granelli, BHcare Director of Communications & Legislative Affairs.
Non-profit BHcare is a state-licensed behavioral health care provider for the shoreline, greater New Haven and the lower Naugatuck Valley with services helping those affected by mental illness, domestic violence and substance abuse.
Cornachini also assisted BHcare by additionally donating 90 pairs of brand-new shoes, said Granelli. The shoes have been forwarded to BHcare's Clothing Bank in Branford and My Sister's Place Thrift Shop in Ansonia, where sales benefit BHcare's domestic violence program.
Cornachini has been operating Shoetique, located at 1060 West Main St. in Branhaven Plaza, for 29 years.
"Carol tends to fly under the radar, but she's unbelievably generous and community-minded," said Granelli.
Giving back is an important part of her philosophy, and helping BHcare holds a special place in her heart, especially because she and her staff can directly assist beneficiaries of Shoetique's donation, Cornachini said.
"I love that we can share our resources for people in need," said Cornachini. "BHcare has been an organization that allows us to make the donation and offer service to those fortunate to benefit from our donation."
Offering service means giving each BHcare client "the whole experience" said Cornachini, from having their feet measured to choosing styles.
"We worked with each person until they were happy with the style and fit. They thanked us countless times -- there were hugs, kisses and tears of joy from both the recipients and my staff. It is the most rewarding event we participate in," said Cornachini.
While 16 BHcare clients definitely benefited from receiving high-end, extremely comfortable Naot brand shoes at no cost, Cornachini said the interaction between the women and her staff was priceless.
"We made them feel special, cared for and cared about, an empowering feeling that was a gift to them and us," said Cornachini, adding, "BHcare is an organization that helps their clients to improve their lives, and I can't think of a better contribution to society."
