08/05/2015 01:50 PMAfter mounting a near-win as a petitioning candidate in 2013, Michael J. Doody is back on the Republican Party's endorsed election slate as a Town Council candidate for the Nov. 2015 race.
Doody last served on the Town Council as a Republican from 2011-13. When he was not endorsed by the Republican Party to run for re-election two years ago, Doody went on to enter the 2013 race as a petitioning Town Council candidate. On Election Day in 2013, Doody received the eighth-highest number of votes (1,266) but did not win one of the nine council seats because his Republican affiliation would have tipped the Town Charter's minority representation balance (no more than six members of one political party may be seated on the council). Republicans have held the council's six-seat majority for the past three terms.
Like Doody, current Republican Town Council member Rose Marie Angeloni was not endorsed by her party in 2013. She got on the 2013 ticket as Republican via petition, winning her re-election bid for a 2013-15 term.
This time around, both Doody and Angeloni are back on the ticket as endorsed Republican candidates for the 2015-17 term, following the 2015 Republican Town Caucus held July 22.
Also endorsed by the party for the 2015 Town Council race are Republican incumbents Mayor Anthony S. Candelora, Alfred D. Rose and Deputy Mayor Joanne S. Wentworth. The party also endorsed new candidate Shawna L. Papa-Holzer to round out its total of six Town Council candidates. Current Republican councilmen Vincent Caprio and Donald J. Fucci are not among the Republican Party's endorsed 2015 Town Council candidates. In 2013, Caprio switched his status from Democrat to Republican and was re-elected as a Republican Party-endorsed candidate.
On July 22, the Republican Party also endorsed Sara-Jane R. Querfeld as its 2015 candidate for an open four-year term on the Board of Education (BOE). Current BOE chairman Lou Paternoster, a Republican, is not listed as a party-endorsed 2015 candidate. His current term will expire Nov. 10, 2015.
The Democratic Town Party has also named its endorsed candidates for the 2015 race. During the party's July caucus, it endorsed current Democratic Town Council members Joseph Faughnan, Marie Diamond and Daniel Armin together with new candidates Frances Lescovich, George Miller and Elisabeth Caplan. The caucus also endorsed current Democratic BOE members Dianne Vumback and Deborah Prunier as incumbent candidates running for BOE in Nov. 2015.
While both parties have set slates, other names may still crop up in the North Branford 2015 municipal race. The deadline for nominating petitions ended Aug. 5 with no petitions filed with the Town Clerk; but Primary petitions may still be filed through Aug. 12. The receipt of additional nominees could trigger a local primary election, which would take place as part of the state-wide process on Sept. 16, 2015.
