07/22/2015 09:20 AMThe silver screen is coming to Guilford thanks to two local community groups. There are two movies on big screens this week—Frozen on Thursday, July 23 and Star Wars IV–A New Hope on Saturday, July 25.
Frozen on July 23
The Guilford Parks & Recreation Department last hosted an outdoor movie night eight years ago. With the recent renovations made to Jacobs Beach, though, Guilford Parks & Recreation thought it would be a good time to bring back the event with a “Christmas in July” theme and a showing of Frozen on Thursday, July 23 at 8:30 p.m. at Jacobs Beach.
“It’s a good community event to get people out,” said Andrew Turner of Guilford Parks & Recreation. “Because Jacobs Beach has been significantly improved in the last few years, we want to invite people to come out to see and enjoy the facility as well.”
Parks & Recreation rented a 200-foot screen so “there will be no bad seats,” according to Turner. The event is free and there will be popcorn and snow cones for sale.
“People enjoy these events because they break routine, give an opportunity to meet new people from the town, and are fun and free for all ages,” said Turner. “It was a hit sensation of a movie that all ages and both genders seemed to enjoy and we like to appeal to as many people as possible. We’re hoping to make it an annual tradition once again.”

Star Wars IV–A New Hope on July 25
The St. George Men’s Group will host its first-ever Nostalgic Drive-In Movie Night on Saturday, July 25 in the St. George Church parking lot at 33 Whitfield Street on the Green in Guilford. Star Wars IV–A New Hope will be shown on a large outdoor drive-in screen and sound will be transmitted through viewers’ car radios for an old-time drive-in experience.
“The drive-in movie was an idea from one of our members and since it was a novel idea, our group decided to run with it,” said Tony Sicignano, chairman of the event. “We enjoy putting on different types of events that people would like to see.”
The St. George Men’s Group hosts a variety of events throughout the year that benefit organizations that serve those in need in the shoreline and New Haven area. The beneficiary of this event is the Amstad/Catholic Worker House in the Hill Section of New Haven. The privately run group tends to the needs of those in one of the poorest neighborhoods in New Haven, acting as a shelter, food pantry, and community kitchen.
The price is $20 per car or $8 for walk-ins. There will be an old-time concession stand with hot dogs, hamburgers, soda, water, chips, popcorn, candy, and ice cream. There will also be an outdoor seating in front of the screen—guests can bring chairs or blankets and there will be loudspeakers at the base of the screen.
The gate and concessions open at 6 p.m.; the movie begins at 8:30 p.m. Rain date is Sunday, Sept. 26.
“We want this to be a fun-filled family event that will allow the parents and grandparents the reminiscent memory of going to the drive-in as a child, while experiencing a fun time with their children and grandchildren—all this while helping the St. George Men’s Group support another charitable organization working to improve the lives of those in need,” said Sicignano.
Tickets are available at the gate or by contacting Tony Sicignano at 203-530-1654 or a0712@sbcglobal.net or Bob Mongillo at 203-314-5478 or RobKM75@live.com.
