Deep River Historical Society Strawberry Social on June 14
Take a fresh, homemade biscuit, cover it with locally grown strawberries, and top the whole thing off with a big dollop of real whipped cream, and there you have the dessert du jour on Sunday, June 14 for the annual Deep River Historical Society Strawberry Social, which will be held this year from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carriage House at 245 Main Street.
The social returns with the popular Berry Basket Raffle, with an array of items such as gift certificates from area merchants.
“The Berry Basket Raffle is always a big draw with prizes donated by local businesses. The entire Strawberry Social event is a major fundraiser for the historical society. We have been holding this social for a very long time. It dates back to before any of the current trustees remember,” said Deep River Historical Society Curator Rhonda Forristall. “Pat Adams used to grow the strawberries in the field adjacent to the Carriage House, but now we buy all ingredients locally.”
Forristall added, “The Deep River Historical Society envisions itself as an integral partner in a community that embraces its heritage. Our mission is to interact with our community in the collection, preservation, and interpretation of Deep River’s place in America’s history through exhibits, programs, research, collections, and publications to inspire current and future generations.”
In addition to a scrumptious, summer dessert, social guests also get the unique opportunity to check out the C.D. Batchelor exhibit, which will be open in the Stone House for viewing during the event.
“This social is always a good time for everyone. It’s a pleasant interlude in a busy day with time to socialize and visit with friends and neighbors and enjoy a delicious treat,” said Forristall. “This is a fun gathering, raising money for a good cause.”
The suggested donation for a big bowl of shortcake is $6 at the door. For more information about the event, contact Charlotte Lazor at 860-526-5979 or clazor@wesleyan.edu.
