Longtime Leader to Leave St. John’s Episcopal Church
North Haven bids adieu to a popular leader in the community as Rev. Matthew Lincoln leaves St. John’s Episcopal Church at the top of the Green after more than 16 years of service.
Lincoln is relocating to New York, where he will serve as the rector of Trinity Episcopal Church in Buffalo, New York.
In response to Lincoln’s departure, First Selectman Mike Freda said, “Reverend Lincoln will be truly missed here in North Haven. His positive impact on our community has been incalculable, and his steady and profound leadership was truly amazing to see through the years. North Haven extends its sincerest appreciation to Reverend Lincoln and his family for their wonderful contributions to our community.”
In a recent announcement to the North Haven congregation, Lincoln said, “I will miss you, even as Catherine [his wife] and I embark on a new calling. It is safe to say I will never serve another church as long as I have served St. John’s. I will never put roots down as deeply as I have in North Haven.”
Although Lincoln said he wouldn’t enjoy the harsh winters in Buffalo, he said he has always felt a call to help in an urban church setting, adding, “Trinity is a parish committed to serving the needs of a growing city and, particularly, to finding ways to connect with people who have felt ignored or shunned by God and the church.”
While Lincoln’s presence will be sorely missed, many in his congregation feel he has led his parishioners to a good place.
In a recent statement St. John’s said, “We are a healthy parish with dedicated lay leaders and active members. We will be able to continue our community service, mission, and ministry during this transition and continue to grow and thrive.”
Beginning in July, St. John’s will begin its transition and search for a new pastor with the support of the Episcopal Church in Connecticut. Senior Warden Andrea Connolly said, “While it is certainly a sad time and change is never without some anxiety, it is also an exciting prospect, and I know we are up to the challenge.”
To celebrate Lincoln’s ministry in North Haven and beyond, members of the community are invited to a reception on Sunday, June 28 at 11:30 a.m. in St. John’s Great Hall, 3 Trumbull Place. Additionally, all are welcome to attend Lincoln’s final worship service at St. John’s at 10 a.m. that morning.
