05/26/2015 02:30 PMWESTBROOK - After a representative from Silktown Roofing examined the Mulvey Center roof, the town actually got good news for a change.
Instead of this winter’s leaks being tied to a roofing failure—an expensive issue to address—the consultant found the leaks were due to roof flashing failures, a less serious problem. The firm estimated it would cost the town no more than $9,000 to make the flashing fixes.
The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to appropriate up to $9,000 to make these roof repairs.
In other good news, a 10-year-life shingle package that was found in the Mulvey Center basement does not match the shingles installed 10 years ago during the building’s renovation—the installed shingles actually have at least a 20-year life. So after this flashing fix is completed, the roof should last for at least another decade.
