01/13/2015 11:00 PMWith unwelcome freezing temperatures comes a welcome side effect-skating at Mill Pond. More than 100 skaters came out last weekend to skate, play hockey, or simply stay warm by the fire.
Generally, the Parks & Recreation Department will open the pond to skaters on weekdays from 3 to 8 p.m., on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. The crew measures the ice to determine the thickness and does not open unless there is at least five inches of ice. People must stay off the ice when the "NO SKATING" sign is posted. It may be closed due to insufficient ice, rough conditions, or soft ice.
