Making Your Workout Worthwhile

Do you like to work out? Do you want to give to a good cause? Would you like to be top dog for the day? Then you may want to sign up for the Saturday, July 12 Guilford Crossfit Competition and fundraiser, Crossfitting for Katie.

Twenty year-old Katie Terwilliger, an avid crossfitter and senior at the University of Connecticut, was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer last July when doctors found a nodule in her neck. She has since undergone surgery and radioactive iodine treatment, but the cancer is back.

In an effort to raise funds for the Terwilliger family, Guilford Crossfit owner Clint Zeidenberg has organized this special fundraising event.

"I am very passionate about this subject," said Zeidenberg. "Katie is a real inspiration. She is battling cancer and still she is working out like crazy. We are providing her with a place to come and forget about everything for a little while."

He added, "We are all about community here and we wanted to do something to help out this family who is struggling both financially and emotionally. The Crossfit competition is going to be a fun day and a great way to help out Katie and her family."

One hundred percent of the proceeds from the event will go directly to Terwilliger's family to help offset mounting medical bills, which include those for surgery, radioactive iodine, and other doctor appointments. The issue is particularly real for this Crossfit community because Terwilliger's mother, Maureen, is an endurance coach who teaches a class at Guilford Crossfit.

The judged competition fundraiser will take place at Guilford Crossfit, located at 387 Soundview Road, starting at 9 a.m. on July 12. The cost for registration is $65 for adults; $55 for teens and kids. This is a two-person team competition, which will include running, kettle bell swings, medicine ball sit-ups, Olympic weight lifting moves, and more. Participants will compete in their divisions against same-sex teams. They will be judged on technique and movement.

"We hope to get a lot of support for this event, and even if you don't want to compete you can come and watch or just donate money to help out the family," said Zeidenberg. "Katie is a great young person, and we hope we can help her through all this and give her something to be happy about."
