11/11/2013 11:00 PMOn Nov. 10, at 8 p.m., North Haven Police officers were summoned to a home for a report of a burglary in progress and that a man was struggling to detain the suspect. Officers arrived and took 72 year-old Adalberto Velez of North Haven into custody
Investigators learned that Velez parked his vehicle one block from the victim’s home. As he entered the victims home, Velez used a flashlight to illuminate his way. As Velez made his way toward the 53 year-old victim’s bedroom, she was awoken and a struggle ensued. While the victim and Velez were struggling with one another, the victim’s 21 year-old son returned home from work earlier than expected. The 21 year old son then called police and detained Velez until their arrival.
Police located a bag that Velez is believed to have brought with him. The bag contained rope with pre-made noose type knots, a folding knife, surgical gloves, and duct tape along with other items. Velez was arrested and held on a $750,000 bond. He was arraigned in Meriden Superior Court on Nov. 12, where he answered to the following charges: home invasion, unlawful restraint, criminal attempt to commit sexual assault first degree, sexual assault third degree, and disorderly conduct.
