11/06/2013 11:00 PMFifteen new probationary firefighers are joining the ranks of the Old Saybrook Fire Department following its Nov. 5 meeting. According to the department this is the largest group entry at one time since the first meeting on Sept. 10, 1924 when 38 members started the organization.
The new firefighters are the result of a successful Recruit Night Open House held in early September which drew 21 attendees. The open house included an introduction, demonstration, and tour.
All 15 of the new members are residents of Old Saybrook and three of them are certified firefighters from time served in other communities. Three other new members have prior experience with other fire departments or are EMTs. The Old Saybrook Fire Department will host a State Firefighter 1 Certification course for those not ceritified in February.
With the addition of the 15 new firefighters, the department's roster stands at 98 members including 22 members in training, 10 junior firefighers, and eight support members serving as fire police and the fire department chaplain.
The new probationary firefighters are Ryan Constantine, Chris Denison, Edward Devaney, Christopher Distefano, Steve Goodstine, Tasha Lathroum, Edwin "Ned" Loiselle, David MacNeill, Porter Moore, Josh Painter, Megan Pennington, Greg Pereira, William Robbins, Oscar Shippee, and Sheri Smith.
