10/22/2013 10:00 AMCan a storm cancel Halloween again in North Haven? Perhaps, but kids won’t have to miss out on trick-or-treating in October. Thanks to the success of last year’s Trunk or Treat, the event returns this year on Saturday, Oct. 26. The event offers kids a safe, supervised chance to collect Halloween goodies—but, just as important, it’s a ton of fun.
“It was a resounding success,” said First Selectman Michael Freda of last year’s event, the town’s first. “Hundreds of parents, hundreds of children were there.”
Town opinion was a strong factor in continuing the community event for a second year.
“I spoke with many, many people during this past year—parents and even children who I saw in the school system—about whether it was good for the town to host it again and everyone thought it was a great idea,” Freda said. “As a result of all that feedback we decided to move forward with the event for Saturday, Oct. 26.”
It’s easy to participate, and there is no admission cost. Parents fill the trunks of their cars with goodies, and then chaperoned, costumed children trek from trunk to trunk to fill their trick-or-treating bags.
Although the basics are the same as last year, a couple of factors should make for a smoother event. The North Haven Police Department will help regulate traffic flow for increased security, and restrooms will be available inside the high school.
If the event proves a success—and there’s little doubt it will—look for trunk-or-treating to become a staple event in North Haven.
“I’m looking forward to a great event,” said Freda. “As far as I’m concerned we can do this every year if the parents and children continue to enjoy it.”
Trunk-or-treating is gaining popularity not only in North Haven, but in other Connecticut towns and across the nation. However—perhaps best of all from a kid’s perspective—attending North Haven’s trunk-or-treat doesn’t have to be a substitute for neighborhood trick-or-treating.
“This event is designed to be a separate event from the normal Halloween that goes on inside the neighborhoods,” Freda noted.
North Haven’s Halloween Trunk or Treat is on Saturday, Oct. 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the North Haven High School parking lot located at 221 Elm Street. The rain or inclement weather date is the following Saturday, Nov. 2.
