Questions but Little Opposition
All three capital projects questions won support from the public at last night's Town Meeting. Few spoke in opposition to any of the proposed spending questions.
While speakers had questions for officials, few spoke in opposition to any of the three proposals. The police station, the school capital maintenance projects, and the proposed synthetic turf field all had their supporters.
A number of speakers last evening stressed the need and urgency for replacing the middle school roof and the Goodwin School windows.
Superintendent of Schools Jan Perruccio said that funding for the windows project had been under discussion by town officials for 15 years and for the roof, for about 7 years. Tennis court replacement had been on the schools' needed capital projects list for the past 7 years. And minutes from Board of Education meetings from 2007-08 recorded discussion about the need for more fields on which school and town teams could play.
More than a dozen speakers stressed their strong support for the proposed artificial turf field as a way to increase field play time for the town's high school, club and recreational teams.
Old Saybrook voters will decide whether or not to authorize $15.1 million in bonding to pay for the proposed capital projects next Thurs., Oct. 10, in a referendum vote.
