Browse for Books to Benefit the Blackstone

The gigantic Friends of the Blackstone Library Book Sale returns to the Branford Town Green on Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22, offering nearly 70,000 books at rock-bottom prices.

Get ready to browse for books, and then some.

From Friday to Sunday, Sept. 20 to 22, the annual Friends of the Blackstone Library’s book sale on the Green will offer nearly 70,000 donated books at rock-bottom prices in categories including children’s, cookbooks, trade paperbacks, history, vintage, science/nature, coffee table books, large print, foreign language, arts and crafts, reference, pocket paperbacks, romance, sports, classics, biography, travel, and more.

Book lovers can stock up with $3 hardcovers, $2 trade paperbacks, 50 cent pocket paperbacks, $5 coffee table books, and $1 videos/CDs/DVDs. On Sunday, “Fill a Bag” sales include filling a bag for $10 from noon to 3 p.m. and filling two bags for $10 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

All of the books are donated or come from private collections; none are carried over from previous annual book sales. A small army of Friends volunteers work to sort the books into categories and many will be on hand to man the tables under the big tent during sale hours this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

“This is the biggest fundraiser of the Friends of the Library to benefit the Blackstone Library,” said Friends President Betsy Klarman, adding that the group just celebrated its 25th year of service to the library.

“We help supply funding to the library director for non-operational expenses; we have sponsored a lecture series and have many interesting programs slated for this year,” said Klarman.

The Friends also provides for special library programming, particularly for the Youth Services Department, as well as helping to purchase equipment for the library, museum passes, movies, concerts, furniture, and even plantings for the library grounds.

So whether you’re seeking that perfect book to compliment your coffee table or one that guarantees a good read, there’s a very good chance you’ll find it this Friday, Saturday and Sunday on the Branford Green.

“It’s been a very popular event in town,” said Klarman. “With almost 70,000 books, there’s something for every reader. That’s almost as many books as the library itself has!”

The Friends of the Blackstone Library Book Sale takes place on the Branford Town Green on Friday, Sept. 20 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, Sept. 22 from noon to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.blackstone.lioninc.org/friends.
