Two East Haven Officers Face Civil Rights Trial

Two East Haven police officers are heading to trial on federal charges of violating the rights of Latinos and their advocates.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin Tuesday, Sept. 17 in U.S. District Court in Hartford for Dennis Spaulding and David Cari, and testimony begins Monday, Sept. 23. They were charged last year with conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights and obstruction of a federal investigation, while Spaulding also was charged with using unreasonable force.

They were among four East Haven officers charged.

Officer Jason Zullo pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in October. Sgt. John Miller, former president of the police union, pleaded guilty last year to violating a person’s civil rights by using unreasonable force.

Cari retired last year.
