07/05/2013 12:00 AMMadison police, acting on information developed by the Connecticut State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit and the West Haven Police Department, arrested Matthew Hagan, 54, of 197 Hunter's Trail, on multiple felony and misdemeanor explosives and fireworks charges. He was also charged with risk of injury to a minor and five counts of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
On Tuesday the state police unity developed information about the illegal possession and sale of display fireworks, which are explosives, and consumer fireworks. The information was passed on to the West Haven Police Department, which opened an investigation and began conducting surveillance in the area of 93 Martin Street, West Haven. At approximately 10:30 p.m., officers from West Haven Police Department's Street Crime Unit observed a transaction take place and intervened. Luigio Zaccariello of West Haven and Robert Crisco of New Haven were detained.
Detectives from the State Police Fire & Explosion Investigation Unit, along with the West Haven fire marshal, responded to the scene to provide technical assistance relative to product identification and relevant charges. A large quantity of display fireworks, consumer fireworks, and $1,999 in cash was seized.
During the course the investigation, information was developed that led the investigation team to 197 Hunter's Trail in Madison. Madison police and the fire marshal were immediately notified and responded. Police said they found a large cache of display fireworks and consumer fireworks was discovered. Hagan was taken into custody.
West Haven police charged Zaccariello of West Haven and Crisco of New Haven with multiple felony and misdemeanor explosives and fireworks charges. Zaccariello was also charged with two counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count of reckless endangerment in the first degree.
The state police seized all of the explosives and fireworks. They were brought to a magazine storage facility pending destruction.
