Blessing of the Fleet June 8 in Branford

On Saturday, June 8, the third annual "Blessing of the Fleet" takes place at the Branford Town Dock, when captains of crafts of all shapes and sizes are encouraged to cruise past for a personalized blessing.

Last year's blessing typified the free event's celebratory air, with representatives of local faith groups offering blessings incorporating the names of passing vessels; even going so far as to pray for good fishing, if the operator indicated he or she welcomed some help from above.

Branford's Annual Blessing of the Fleet is hosted by the New Haven Chapter of United States Power Squadron.

"Boat owners of all types, be it power, sail, kayak, fishing, inflatable, or row boat, are invited to participate," said Mark Cisto, Squadron Chaplain.

The squadron is the oldest operating squadron in the country, celebrating 100 years in 2014. On June 8, Cisto will be joined by members of Branford Clergy at the microphone to give blessings of watercraft which pass the Branford Town Dock between noon and 1 p.m. Vessel operators should approach the dock from the Branford River and proceed on toward Branford Harbor.
