Hike Beacon Hill June 1, CT Trail Day

Salt marsh looking east from Beacon Hill.

A tramp past scenic wetlands and along steep forested trap rock ridge is how Branford Land Trust invites residents to enjoy Connecticut Trail Day this Sat. June 1.

The 2.5 mile Beacon Hill preserve walk sets off at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday; launching from the parking lot located at the intersection of Pent Road and Rose Hill Road (off Route 1 at the Branford/East Haven town line). Hike concludes at 11 a.m.

The Branford Land Trust describes Beacon Hill as the southern most part of the Metacomet Ridge, a traprock ridge stretching from Connecticut through Massachusetts. Consisting of 70 acres, Beacon Hill incorporates vast swaths of tidal wetlands and a steep, forested traprock ridge rising 80 feet above the Farm River Estuary.  Still evident are the remains of a small quarry operation on the southern tip, with its dramatic vertical rock cliffs.  From the top, hikers are rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Long Island Sound, the New Haven skyline, and the Farm River Estuary.

In the event of rain, the hike is postponed until June 2, 9:30 AM. Change notices will be posted at www.facebook.com/CTForestandParkAssociation by Saturday morning.
