DHHS Student Earns National Journalism Award

Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice announced May 20 that Daniel Hand High School senior Carlin McCarthy has won the national Scholastic's Student Journalism Contest.

"Formerly Weekly Reader's Student Publishing Contest, this prestigious affair honors the nation's best non-fiction writing by students in grades 3 to 12. Carlin took the top prize in the Individual Writing: Grades 9-12 category. The judges were incredibly impressed with what they read," Linda Swank of the Association of Educational Publishers said of Carlin's work.

"In addition to some other prizes, Carlin and a parent/guardian receive round-trip airfare and a one-night hotel stay in Washington, D.C., so they can attend the Student Journalism Awards luncheon that will take place on Monday, June 3. Congratulations to Carlin."

Scarice congratulated McCarthy and Daniel Hand teacher Frank Barron, who also is advisor to the student newspaper, The Hand Print.

"This is a very prestigious award," he stated.
