4.7% Tax Increase? NB Referendum Vote Today

At an April budget workshop,Town Manager Mike Paulhus distributes revised budget pages to Town Council members. Today, voters can let the council know if residents approve of the council's recommended $48.66 million town budget for the 2013-14 fiscal year.

North Branford's 2013-14 Budget Referendum Question will be decided at the polls today, May 14. Polls open at noon and close at 8 p.m.

Registered voters have the chance to let the Town Council know if the council's recommended budget of $48.66 million, which will increase taxes next year by 4.7 percent, should be adopted.

The Town Charter requires at least 15 percent of the town's electorate to vote in order for the results of today's referendum to be actionable by Town Council, which must adopt a new budget for the new fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2013.

Historically, voters who actually come out to the polls to vote on whether they approve or disapprove of the budget have fallen far short of the required percentage.

Any resident registered to vote in North Branford can participate in the May 14 referendum. Polling places open at noon and close at 8 p.m.  District One residents vote at Jerome Harrison Elementary School, 335 Fox Road (Route 80).  District Two residents vote at the former Stanley T. Williams School, 1332 Middletown Ave. (Route 17).
