H-K Middle School in the National Spelling Bee

Students at Haddam Killingworth Middle School (HKMS) competed in the National Spelling Bee with hundreds of other schools across the country on

Jan. 18. Six students from each grade competed in the final round: Sarah Parkhurst, Chris Sacchi, Eric Giulini, Casey Szeligowski, Devon Garrett, Max Williams, Quincy Platt, Luke Armenia, Greta Nystrom, Devin Gallant, Jon Lord, Grace Velez, Nicholas Formica, Jim Martino, Sam Briggs, Schyuler Dragoo, Brandon Iovene, Jeremy Fleig, Phoebe Corey, Caitlyn Carvalho, Abby Smith, Ben Blair, Michaela Flaherty, and Lizzy McManus.

The championship round went into a sudden death tie-breaker between Nick Formica and Ben Blair. The winner, Ben Blair, will represent HKMS at the New Haven Register Spelling Bee in Lyman Auditorium at SCSU in New Haven this March. The winner of the New Haven Register Spelling Bee will receive money for travel accommodations to Washington, D.C., to compete at the 2012 Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee the last of May. The final bee will be broadcast on ESPN.
