Fire Hydrant Flags Installed

Eagle Scout Candidate Daniel Cassidy explains hydrant flag installation to team members.

Members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 463 of Northford installed Hy-Viz reflective fire hydrant identification flags on each of the town's 233 fire hydrants on Saturday, June 2.  This project was coordinated by Eagle Scout candidate Daniel Cassidy of North Branford and was assisted by other scouts, their adult leaders and parents.  The town purchased the identification flags that will improve the visibility of hydrant location to firefighters and coordinated the installation project with the Troop. Eagle Scout candidate Cassidy designed a plan that led teams out on the town roads, provided hydrant maps with their locations and tracked each team’s progress throughout the day. Prior to this, he research all of the hydrant locations, assembled the flag kits and provided instructions to the crews in proper installation procedures.

According to Fire Chief William Seward, the newly installed hydrant flags will provide fire department personnel advanced visualization of hydrant sites especially in darkness and during adverse weather conditions such as deep snow.  The town chose a patriotic color scheme of red, white and blue stripped flags.  As part of the Eagle Scout Project, Mr. Cassidy will also coordinate a car wash at the North Branford Fire Department Station 4, 1351 Middletown Avenue in upcoming weeks to establish a reserve account for flag replacement costs that will sustain this project over a long term.
