Albis Welcomes House Passage of Brownfield Remediaion Bill
State Representative James Albis (D-East Haven) welcomed House passage today of a bill that implements and funds the assessment, clean up and re-use of "brownfields" – contaminated and often long-abandoned properties that can be remediated and turned into productive sites for economic development, open space or other public uses.
"I am very pleased to support this important bill," Rep. Albis said. "Our cities and towns benefit from this legislation because these remediation projects-not only immediately, but also in the future-and will boost real estate and construction development."
The 2012/13 biennial budget approved by Democrats in the legislature and signed by Governor Malloy includes $25 million each year for brownfield remediation.
Rep. Albis pointed out that House bill 6526, "An Act Concerning Brownfield Remediation And Development As An Economic Driver," represents a larger effort that protects land through open space acquisitions and brownfield remediation.
Passage of the bill was praised by Environmental Protection Commissioner Daniel C. Esty who said, "This bill demonstrates that we can pursue environmental protection and economic development together."
The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Rep. Albis serves on the Judiciary, Banks and Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committees.
