Over the years, the Hagaman Memorial Library has received substantial assistance from the Friends of the East Haven Hagaman Library. The group has provided the library (and the community who visits it) with many new offerings that wouldn't otherwise have been housed within the library walls.

"They have been a huge asset to the library," said Cynthia Gwiazda, community services librarian at Hagaman. "I don't know what we would do without them."

The group currently has more than 100 members, with about 10 active members serving on the executive board. But the Friends group is looking for even more members to help with its various initiatives, from fundraising to publicity, according to Gwiazda.

"They're looking for people who would like to participate and be more active members," she said. "And they're always looking for new people who can bring in fresh ideas."

Gwiazda noted that the Friends has brought many new technology offerings into Hagaman for residents of all ages to enjoy. It is responsible for a wireless network that can be accessed throughout the library, enabling the use of devices from iPads to electronic book readers (such as the Amazon Kindle) to laptop computers.

Last fall, the Friends provided the funds the library used to put an AWE Early Literacy Station in place. The computer and software program is geared toward children aged 2 to 10.

Gwiazda said the Friends has sponsored some of her programs, including a pastel painting class held last summer. Gwiazda said she is working to bring more art programs to Hagaman.

In addition to such events, the Friends has helped bring a variety of programs to the library. Fundraisers such as appraisal fairs, fashion shows, Military Whist parties, and book and bake sales have garnered success for the library.

The group has been honored for its efforts. Last June, the Friends won the Friends of Connecticut Libraries group award for outstanding effort.

The Friends meets on the second Tuesday of each month. The cost to join is $5 a year.
