Madison Building Gas Leak Causes Evacuation

Madison Fire Department officials responded to a natural gas leak reported at approximately 9:35 a.m. Friday morning at 64 Wall Street. Roughly 35 people were evacuated from Madison buildings due to the leak, said Spokesman Bob Brennan of Southern Connecticut Gas Company (SCGC) who supplies the building.

According to Brennan, the leak was caused by a contractor on site who punctured a 2-inch gas line with excavation equipment. The leak was capped by SCGC at approximately 10 a.m.

Fire Department officials, once on scene, shut down Wall St. at Rt. 1 and Railroad Ave, and Bradley Rd. After evacuating the general area, and waiting for SCGC to cap the leak, officials checked all nearby buildings for natural gas in the air. When the site and nearby buildings were cleared, the evacuees were let back in the buildings and road blocks were removed. There were no injuries reported. Bill Clorite, who owns the property at 64 Wall St., could not be reached for comment.
