What's the Story with... the Closing of Cumberland Farms?

Cumberland Farms will open its doors with a new look come December.

Those who rely on Madison's Cumberland Farms for their morning cup of coffee or weekly fuel fill-up will have to forage elsewhere. The convenience store and gas station at 633 Boston Post Road closed its doors Oct. 25 in order to install new underground gas tanks, which must be replaced periodically to prevent leakage.

Cumberland Farms is giving itself six weeks to complete the replacement and is taking advantage of the down time to renovate the store with a new look while adding a new menu of freshly prepared foods.

"Right now, Cumberland Farms is in the process of renovating and updating its convenience stores across its footprint and the store in Madison is on the list to have the renovation," said Christen Graham, spokesperson for Cumberland Farms.

Currently, all of the food has been removed and the store has been "almost gutted," according to Eileen Banisch, executive director of the Madison Chamber of Commerce, who added that panels on the exterior of the building will also be replaced.

Inside, the renovated store will offer wider aisles, a Chill Zone area with frozen drinks, a coffee bar, and sandwiches made to order.

"You'll notice it right away," Graham said.

The company is also planning a fundraiser to accompany its grand opening. After the store reopens, a portion of the proceeds from a month of beverage sales will benefit one of the schools in town, yet to be determined.

"We work to raise at least $1,000 for the school and the community," Graham noted.

The store should be open for business again the first week of December, looking much the same from the outside, but offering more on the inside.
