Wall Street Shut Down Briefly Saturday
MADISON -- Police shut down a section of Wall Street Saturday afternoon as they investigated reports of shots fired at 64 Wall Street, an apartment building. Police said their investigation, which included checks inside the building, showed no signs of weapons or shots fired.
At approximately 12:02 p.m., police responded to a report of shots fired at 64 Wall Street. Officers had been called to that address earlier in the shift to handle an argument between neighbors. The building, located in the downtown business district, contains four or five apartments. According to Sgt. Jonathan Pardo, once police arrived on the scene residents in the building described the shots as coming from from the upper level apartment. The sound of shots was also reported by other residents in the immediate area.
Madison police secured the scene and evacuated the area, shutting down the street for a time. Initially, officers were unable to make contact with the resident of the upper level apartment. After a short period of time inside the building, Pardo said, the officers were able to contact the resident and check of the apartment showed no signs of a weapon "or any indication that a weapon had been fired." Pardo added, "Officers checked all the apartments in the building and no weapon was found."
The event remains under investigation.
Several other law enforcement and public safety agencies responded to provide assistance. These included the Guilford Police Department, Connecticut State Police, Clinton Police Department, Madison Ambulance and Madison Hose Company #1. The state police have a command post set up at the Madison police headquarters as the two agencies continue to investigate the murder March 3 of Barbara Hamburg.
