A Refuge for All Living Things

Clinton Cub Scouts Pack 7 recently participated in a Bio Board project in conjunction with the Clinton Land Conservation Trust (CLCT). The scouts painted one dozen four-foot by six-foot plywood boards—brown on one side and white on the other. Six of the boards were placed at the Jesse Buell Forest. The boards were laid out in sunny spots within the forest and will serve as homes for small rodents and snakes seeking shelter from winter's chill or summer's heat. The boards are flipped over from light to dark when the seasons change in order to provide a warm or cool spot for the animals that seek refuge under them.

Chuck Annicelli, a herpetologist and member of the CLCT, provided the plywood and will periodically check the boards to see what types of snakes and other animals are living beneath them. Annicelli also brought a few of his pet snakes to show the scouts and described the types of snakes most commonly found along the shoreline of Connecticut.

Cub Scouts from Pack 7 who participated in the Bio Board project were Rory Maucione (Den 1 Tigers), Will Roberts (Den 2 Wolves), Justin King (Den 1 Tigers), Allan Wohlstrom (Den 2 Tigers), Hunter Kyhn (Bears), Isaiah Lyons (Den 2 Wolves), and Ryan Warner (Den 1 Tigers).
