Police said a secretary at Jerome Harrison Elementary School observed Valerie Minicucci, 40, of North Branford, inserting a syringe into her toe in a restroom stall. Minicucci claimed to be dropping her child off for school but when she was not seen leaving the building, staff began searching for her. School officials notified police who responded and found Minicucci sitting in her vehicle in the parking lot.

Upon a search of her vehicle, police found numerous hypodermic needles as well as two small plastic bags containing a white substance and a third bag containing glassine envelopes containing a brown powder. A field test performed by police indicated that the white powder was cocaine and the brown power was heroin.

She was released on a written promise to appear in court in New Haven on Jan. 29.
