01/14/2010 11:00 PMHere are some local organizations where you can donate money to help relief efforts in Haiti.
Guilford Rotary Club
The Rotary Club of Guilford will continue its longstanding efforts with Rotary International. Rotary International, the umbrella organization for clubs worldwide, has established the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund and is bringing desperately needed support, medical supplies and shelter for the homeless on the stricken island. Guilford Rotarians immediately voted to contribute $5,000 to the district funds which will be sent to those in need through Rotary International.
Nationally, U.S. Rotarians have already sent 1700 shelter boxes and seventeen Haitian clubs are effectively deploying them to where they are most needed. Shelter boxes provide housing for up to ten people and are equipped with a water tank, water purification tablets, insulated sleeping mats, mosquito netting, multi-fueled stoves and other supplies to maintain a family for six months in any disaster area. In addition, the Guilford club is collecting funds for a second shelter box and also the Haitian Health Foundation which is supporting refugees from Port-au-Prince.
Guilford High School InterAct ("junior Rotary") students are planning a concert to be held on Monday, February 8 at Guilford High School. (For information, contact Stephanie Jacobs at 203-453-0278.)
Dr. Paul Heeren, president of the Guilford club, invites donations from individuals who would like to add to Guilford Rotary's relief efforts.
Checks payable to "Guilford Rotary" with "Haiti Disaster Relief" in the memo can be sent to Guilford Rotary Club, P.O. Box 32, Guilford CT 06437. Contact Dr. Heeren at 203-453-9888 and check www.GuilfordCTRotary.org for more information.
